Local historian Bill Cavaliere
Bill has three different lectures availible for your group or family gathering. All three represent local history, and are presented with a PowerPoint slide show:
"The Surrenders of Geronimo": The Chiricahua Apaches were the last Indian tribe in the US to surrender. The incident took place in nearby Skeleton Canyon in 1886. After Geronimo surrendered to General Nelson Miles, the officers, realizing the historical significance, erected a pile of rocks at the scene to commemorate the event. Today this pile of stones is loacted on private property and is closed to the public. Various shots of the surrender site are shown in the PowerPoint. Also, the site of Geronimo's earlier surrender to General George Crook, located 25 miles south of the border in Mexico, is also shown. After agreeing to surrender, Geronimo changed his mind and escaped. Fortunately, General Crook brought a photographer with him, and these old photographs are Shawn in the PowerPoint, along with recent shots of the exact scenes, 120 years later.
"Victorio": The life of Apache chief Victorio is examined through photographs taken during the lecturer's journey deep into Mexico, following the Indian's trail. Victorio and his people were surrounded by the Mexican army at a remote hill called Tres Castillos, where they were wiped out by General Terrazas and his troops. Situated 130 miles from Chihuahua City, Tres Castillos even today is a landmark visited by few people. Also visited are Terrazas' hacidenda, Cerro Mata Ortiz, the scene of a battle between Geronimo and the Mexican army, and other sites of historical interest.
"The History of the Sheriff's Office": The history of the sheriff's office, the highest-ranking law enforcement position within the county, is discussed, beginning with the creation of the position in early times, on through the days of the wild west, and up to modern times. Cases noteworthy to Hidalgo County are examined, as well as crimes common to our area, training, drug interdiction, public relations, humorous incidents, and much more. Many photographs taken in the field are shown.
A fee of $30.00 per lecture is charged, used to defray
the cost of gasoline and other expenses.
